The caption of the source image, a newspaper clipping, reads:
Fieberhaft fahndet die Polizei von Chikago nach dem Massenmörder, der aus bisher ungeklärten Motiven am Donnerstag in einem Wohnheim acht Lernschwestern auf bestialische Weise ermordet hat (unser Bild zeigt die Opfer von links, Gloria Davy, Merlita Gargullo, Valentina Pasion, Suzanne Farris; unten: Patricia Matusek, Marianne Jordan, Nina Schmale und Pamela Wilkening). Eine neunte Schwester hatte sich verstecken und später die Polizei benachrichtigen können.
(The police of Chicago searches frantically for the mass murderer, who, for unknown reasons, brutishly killed eight student nurses in a dormitory on Thursday (our picture shows the victims from the left: Gloria Davy, Merlita Gargullo, Valentina Pasion, Suzanne Farris; below: Patricia Matusek, Mary Ann Jordan, Nina Schmale and Pamela Wilkening). A ninth nurse was able to hide and later call the police.)
The photographs, taken from a yearbook of the nurse’s school, combined with their circumstance of death seem to force a collective identity upon the women.
