In 1978 Richter photographed the surface of oil painting Halifax [CR: 432-5]. The photographs were taken from different angles, different distances and different lighting. The photographs were then arranged in a large grid, consisting of eight individually framed panels, each containing 16 photographs mounted on cardboard [CR: 441). In 1998 offset prints were made from the panels.

The motifs of the 128 photographs were also used in two artist's books [Edition: 56 and 100] and one photo edition [Edition: 101].
