Die beiden mit Festnahme [WVZ: 674/1-2] betitelten Gemälde sind Teil der Serie 18. Oktober 1977 und beziehen sich auf die Verhaftung Andreas Baaders, Holger Meins und Jan-Carl Raspes am Morgen des 1. Juni 1972 in einem Garagenhof in Frankfurt (Main) nach einem Schusswechsel. Die RAF hatte Deutschland in den Wochen vor den Verhaftungen mit zahlreichen Bombenanschlägen erschüttert und damit eine der größten Fahndungsaktionen in der BRD ausgelöst.
Für diese Gemälde greift Gerhard Richter auf Standbilder von Aufnahmen der ARD zurück, die die Festnahme der drei Männer für die Abendnachrichten von einem benachbarten Dach aus gefilmt hatte[1]. Am 8. Juni 1972 wurden die Standbilder als Fotografien in der Zeitschrift stern veröffentlicht. Genau wie dort zeigen die Gemälde zwei aufeinander folgende Momentaufnahmen[2]: Der Blick richtet sich von oben auf einen Garagenhof, in dem sich neben einer weißen Hauswand mehrere Autos, eine Person und ein größeres, dunkles Gefährt ausmachen lassen. Richter übertrug die schwarz-weißen Vorlagen auf die Leinwand und verwischte die Umrisse so stark, dass sich Genaueres nur schwer ausmachen lässt. Aufgrund der hohen Zirkulation der Abbildungen in der Presse ist aber davon auszugehen, dass die Szene zeitgenössischen Betrachtern bekannt gewesen sein dürfte[3].
Diese zeigt ein Haus und einen Garagenhof in Frankfurt (Main)[4], in dem mehrere Autos parken und in dem ein Panzerwagen der Polizei zu sehen ist, der Holger Meins und Andreas Baader, die sich in einer der Garagen verschanzt hatten, den Fluchtweg abschneidet. Nachdem Baader durch einen Schuss in den Oberschenkel außer Gefecht gesetzt war, ergab sich Meins und wurde von der Polizei gezwungen, sich auszuziehen[5]. Festnahme 1 [WVZ: 674-1] zeigt auf der linken Seite ein helles Haus sowie den Panzerwagen und parkende Autos davor. Holger Meins, der vor die Garage getreten ist, ist dagegen lediglich als dunkler Schatten angedeutet. In Festnahme 2 [WVZ: 674-2] hat sich das Militärfahrzeug an die Hofeinfahrt zurückgezogen. Holger Meins, dessen mittlerweile nackter Oberköper unscharf zu erkennen ist, steigt gerade aus seiner Hose. Die Verwischungen sind im zweiten Bild zwar immer noch sehr stark, wirken aber etwas ruhiger und weniger bewegt, sodass einzelne Details auszumachen sind. Die Konturen des großen Hauses erscheinen dagegen weit unschärfer als noch im ersten Bild.
Chronologisch gesehen stehen Festnahme 1 und 2 zusammen mit dem Jugendbildnis [WVZ: 672-1] am Anfang des Zyklus 18. Oktober 1977. Die Festnahme von Baader, Raspe und Meins ist einerseits der Auftakt für die Gefängnisaufenthalte der Protagonisten des Zyklus[6], und damit auch ihrer schlussendlichen Selbstmorde, die Gemälde stehen andererseits aber auch stellvertretend für den Kampf zwischen RAF und den staatlichen Behörden. Mit den Verhaftungen war den terroristischen Aktionen der RAF zwar vorerst ein Ende gesetzt worden, die Diskussionen über die Angemessenheit der Maßnahmen gegen die Terroristen und der Vorwurf, dass der Staatsschutz irrationale Züge angenommen hatte, standen aber noch lange im Raum[7].
Richter hat zwar keinesfalls eine Heroisierung der Terrorgruppe angestrebt, sieht die Terroristen aber dennoch als Opfer ihrer Ideologie: „Aber eben nicht Opfer einer ganz bestimmten Ideologie von links oder rechts, sondern von ideologischem Verhalten allgemein. Das hat eher zu tun mit dem immerwährenden menschlichen Dilemma, ganz allgemein: revolutionieren und scheitern – [...] Mich interessiert etwas anderes, [...] also das Warum einer Ideologie, die soviel bewirkt; warum wir Ideologien haben, ob das eine unausweichliche, notwendige Eigenschaft von uns ist – oder eine überflüssige, nur hinderliche, lebensgefährliche, ein Wahn.”[8]
