Das Gemälde Zelle gehört zu der Bilderserie 18. Oktober 1977 und zeigt die leere Gefängniszelle von Andreas Baader, einem der RAF-Anführer, der am 18. Oktober 1977 in seiner Zelle in Stuttgart-Stammheim erschossen aufgefunden wurde.
Wie alle Gemälde des Zyklus bezieht sich das Gemälde auf eine fotografische Vorlage. In diesem Fall handelt es sich um eine Polizeifotografie, aufgenommen nach Entdeckung des Selbstmordes, dessen farbiges Original im Archiv der Staatsanwaltschaft Stuttgart aufbewahrt wird. Dieses lässt zusätzliche Details erkennen, so sind unter anderem mehrere Bücher und eine Schreibmaschine auf dem Boden vor dem Regal zu erkennen sowie eine dreieckige, rote Fahne, die neben dem Bücherregal an der Wand hängt. Zudem sind beispielsweise die Umrisse von Baaders Leiche, die mit Kreide auf den Boden aufgemalt wurden und die Titel einiger der Bücher im Regal erkennbar. Durch die Kreide-Silhouette am Boden wird, ebenso wie durch den aufgehängten Mantel, auf den ehemaligen Insassen der Zelle und dessen ominöse Abwesenheit verwiesen[1]. Diese Verbindung ist in Richters Gemälde durch die starken Verwischungen zwar abgeschwächt, aber durchaus noch wahrnehmbar.
Das Gemälde wird von einer Senkrechten mittig unterteilt: Die rechte Seite wird von einem wandhohen Regal eingenommen, in dem sich Bücher aneinanderreihen. In der linken Hälfte dominieren die hellen Töne der Wände. Über einem Wandschirm, der den Badbereich der Zelle abschirmt, hängt ein dunkler Mantel. Wie kein anderes Gemälde der Serie wird Zelle von einer auffälligen, vertikalen Verwischung bestimmt. Diese sorgt dafür, dass die Bücher fast anfangen, vor dem Auge des Betrachters zu flimmern. Alle Gegenstände in der Zelle scheinen in Bewegung zu geraten und den Betrachter (bzw. den Bewohner) mitzureißen. Die Zelle wird somit zum Abbild einer tödlichen Falle[2]. Durch die dunkle Gestaltung des Bodens scheint es zudem, als würde der Zelle bzw. dem Gefangenen der Boden entzogen, obwohl das Bücherregal einen sowohl intellektuellen wie auch physischen Halt bieten sollte. Der bedrohliche Gesamteindruck wird außerdem von der Fahne verstärkt, die in der schwarz-weißen Wiedergabe Richters an das Fallbeil einer Guillotine erinnert. Die Verwischung und die damit einhergehende Unschärfe des Motivs spiegeln somit auch den Umgang der Öffentlichkeit mit den Geschehnissen[3].
Dieses Gemälde verweist im Gegensatz zu den Gemälden Erschossener 1 und 2 [WVZ: 669/1-2] aber auch auf den Lebensalltag Andreas Baaders im Gefängnis. Auch wenn viele der persönlichen Gegenstände nicht eindeutig zu identifizieren sind, lassen insbesondere die zahlreichen Bücher einigen Aufschluss zu. Unter den identifizierten Bänden finden sich vornehmlich politische Werke revolutionärer Natur, aber auch Bücher über Kunst und Geschichte. Insgesamt bewahrte Baader 974 Bände in seiner Zelle auf. Sie geben einen Einblick in sein Leben als Gefangener und zeigen, dass er trotz seines Schulabbruchs daran arbeitete, sich intellektuell weiterzubilden[4]. Die Bände verweisen auch auf den Versuch der RAF, ihre politisch-motivierten Aktionen mithilfe von ideologischen Schriften zu untermauern, die allerdings zumeist der ehemaligen Journalistin Ulrike Meinhof zugeschrieben wurden[5].
Wiederholt äußerte sich Gerhard Richter über die Gefahren, die seiner Meinung nach vom Glauben an Ideologien ausgehen: „Kein Zweifel, dass Ideologien schädlich sind, dass wir sie also sehr wichtig nehmen müssen: als Verhaltensweise und nicht inhaltlich (inhaltlich sind alle gleich falsch). [...] Die Bilder sind auch ein Abschied und dies in vielerlei Richtungen. [...] im ideologischen Sinn: Abschied von einer bestimmten Heilslehre und darüber hinaus Abschied von der Illusion, unakzeptable Lebensumstände in dieser konventionell kämpferischen Form ändern zu können (diese Art revolutionären Denkens und Handelns ist vergeblich, passé).'[6] Auch das Gemälde Zelle kann als Manifestation der Ideologien innewohnenden Gefahren verstanden werden. Die Bücherwand in Baaders Zelle repräsentiert bildlich die Vielzahl politischer Ideologien sowie ihre Folgen sowohl für den Einzelnen, dessen Tod durch die leere Zelle versinnbildlicht wird, als auch für die Gesellschaft[7]. Gleichzeitig ist die dem Motiv innewohnende Gewöhnlichkeit und Normalität besonders alarmierend[8].
