Arnold Bode was born on December 23, 1900 in Kassel, Germany.
He died on October 3, 1977.

Bode is the founder of documenta Kassel which started in 1955. The exhibition, featuring a broad overview of 20th century art was a huge success. Bode served as the director of the exhibition through documenta 4 in 1968.

Following numerous awards for outstanding service in the field of contemporary art, Bode – architect, painter, designer and curator – received the German Federal Cross of Merit in 1974.
