Published on the occasion of the exhibition Gerhard Richter. 40 Years of Painting at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this publication represents a broad range of Gerhard Richter's paintings of the last 40 years.

Gerhard Richter's diverse body of work questions broadly held attitudes about the inherent importance of stylistic consistency for an artist. It ranges from photo-based pictures all across the board to gestural abstraction. The 'natural' evolution of individual artistic sensibility, the spontaneous component of creativity and the relationship of technological means and mass media imagery to traditional studio methods and formats. Richter has always kept his distance from revolutionaries and conservatives alike regarding what painting “should” be. This has resulted in what has been among the most convincing renewal of painting's vitality in late 20th- and early 21st-century art.

This publication consists of a critical essay by curator Robert Storr, a rare interview with the artist himself, a chronology, an exhibition history, and nearly 300 colour and duotone reproductions.

Gerhard Richter is widely recognized as one of the most significant painters working today, and he is certainly among the most influential. He has worked in a wide range of media since the early 1960s, producing abstractions, landscapes, images derived from the mass media and from other photographs, and more. Seen together, these works call into question such widely held assumptions as the importance of stylistic consistency, individual artistic sensibility and spontaneous creativity. They also explore the impact of technology and media imagery on the traditional methods and formats of painting.

The Museum of Modern Art has published two important books on Richter, both written by Robert Storr: one covering forty years of his work, and published to accompany the Museum's large retrospective of his work in 2002, and one focusing on a single crucial series, October 18, 1977. This book brings together the essays and recent interviews from both of those books in a single volume.

The catalogue Gerhard Richter: Bilder aus privaten Sammlungen was published to coincide with exhibitions in Baden-Baden, Beijing, Edinburgh, Vienna and Duisburg in 2008 and 2009.

Works from the Böckmann, Frieder Burda and Ströher Collections, and also from other private collections are highlighted and allow an insight spanning 40 years of artistic creation. The paintings from the years 1963 – 2007 reflect both the history of post-war Germany and the development of Gerhard Richter’s painting.

Three-volume box set.

Vol. 1: Illustrated works in exhibition. This volume (196 pp) contains approximately 92 four-colour and black and white plates (272 total works reproduced), a complete catalogue of the retrospective exhibition, and an introduction, word of greeting and preface (in German) by Suzanne Pagé, Wenzel Jacob and Björn Springfeldt, respectively.

Vol. 2: Texts by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Peter Gidal, and Birgit Pelzer, with numerous black and white reference illustrations (112 pp).

Vol. 3: Catalogue Raisonné of Richter's paintings and sculptures from 1962-1993, with numerous four-colour and black and white plates (approximately 2,000 total works reproduced), a complete Catalogue Raisonné of Richter's work, a list of works and information on the list of works. Includes a biography, exhibition history, selected texts (bibliography) and selected films (in German).

As a classic theme in painting Richter has drawn landscapes since 1968 when they first appeared as an independent work group in his oeuvre. Like no other motif, landscapes have occupied Richter over a long period. This volume affords an unparalleled insight into Richter's landscape paintings, in which landscape and abstraction are not opposed to each other, but appear instead as intertwined strands in the painter's view and his experience of reality.

The collectors Georg and Ingrid Böckmann have amassed Richter works encompassing almost his whole career, starting back in the 1960s. All genres from portraits, to landscapes, to still lifes, to geometric colour charts, to his famous abstract compositions.

As this collection has proved to be so extensive, it gives valuable insight into all aspects of the artist's œuvre. Known for guarding his privacy and being scarce with this remarks regarding his work, the statements and interviews contained in the book clarify the painter’s opinion towards art and his newfound approaches and formulations.

The catalogue was published on the occasion of an exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea in 2006, after being shown in Malaga, Lisbon and Athens beforehand.

The art critic Rae-Kyung Park and Jürgen Schilling, curator of the exhibition, introduce Gerhard Richter's œuvre. Numerous quotes of the artist illuminate the exhibited groups of work, which reach from early photo paintings and colour field paintings to abstract paintings.

Gerhard Richter: Bilder 1963 – 2007 is the catalogue published to coincide with the exhibition at the National Art Museum in Beijing in 2008.

Works from the collections Böckmann, Frieder Burda and Ströher, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, as well as from other private collections are highlighted and allow an insight into 40 years of Gerhard Richter's artistic career. The paintings from the years 1963 – 2007 reflect both the history of post-war Germany and the development of Gerhard Richter’s painting.

The bilingual exhibition catalogue Gerhard Richter e la dissolvenza dell'imagine nell'arte contemporanea/Gerhard Richter and the Disappearance of the Image in Contemporary Art was published in 2010 on the occasion of the exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Gerhard Richter’s oeuvre is reviewed under the aspect of gradual disappearance, and dissolving concrete contents. The process of disappearance can be traced back to Richter’s early work of blurred photo-paintings, then to his abstract over-paintings of figurative images and to his abstract paintings.

Gerhard Richter’s paintings are juxtaposed with works by seven other artists, including Lorenzo Banci, Antony Gormley, Xie Nanxing and Wolfgang Tillmans amongst others.

Both the exhibition Out of Focus. After Gerhard Richter and this associated catalogue examine the stylistic device of blurring in contemporary art. Richter is a forerunner of this technique, and here his oeuvre is juxtaposed with the works of 23 other artists of later generations.

The contributors to the catalogue analyse the different elements of blurring that can be found in paintings over the centuries and blurring in photography; referring to optical procedures.
In order to trace the principles of blurring in contemporary art, the exhibition shows paintings as well as photographs from the artists. Amongst the German artists are Anna & Bernhard Blume, Wolfgang Ellenrieder, Adam Jankowski, Karin Kneffel and Franziskus Wendels.
The International artists include: Pablo Alonso, David Armstrong, Tamara K. E., Bill Jacobson, Peter Loewy, Qiu Shihua and Paul Winstanley.
